The Selfish Giant_Clio Barnard.SPOILERS

The Selfish Giant was produced in 2013 by Clio Barnard. She explored the themes of family and friendship and focused on the genre of crime the most.

The selfish giant includes two friends(Arbor and Swifty) who stick together through thick and thin, that is until Barnard included an unpredictable ending.

The opening scene of this film grabs the attention of the viewer straight away with the use of extreme close up and unusual lighting. Because it is a close up of the two friends gripping hands it also grabs out emotional side and shows us how strong their friendship is. This same shot is used at the end of the production also however the mise en scene changed slightly. The hands are dirtier(showing the struggles they've faced), the lighting darker(showing something dramatic happened) and no use of language just the muffled cries in the background.

She used cinematography numerous times in the 117 minute film however what grabbed my attention the most was when the scenes changed. I noticed that when the scene changes the division would be a quite natural landscape. The lightening would be pleasent and there would be no drama to distract us from the peaceful surrounding. These divisions also forshadow what happened/used further on in the film. For example the first division we see is a green field, with blue skies and horses. A closeup is used on with the horses telling us they may be seen later on.

The horses are used tramensly throughout and are what help the narrative proceed. Fishtank also used horses to symbolise a characters emotion. The horse in Fishtank died and it showed us how a part of nia died with it, this is similar to the horse in Selfish giant, because when it does die it change Swiftys character as he became less 'soft'. This was a beautiful moment in the film as soon as the horse died the lighting immediately got dark to show the boys emotion and anger.

This film is relatable two most of the people living in poverty however to me it makes me realise of how I take money, family and life in general for granted. When the two friends first receive their money for their work they each state what they were going to spend it on. Not thinking about fashion trends, electrical devices or thenself(like most teens would these days) they both chose to spend it on mums electricity and a new sofa. This touches us because they are only kids themself yet they are worring on how to keep the house warm and keep others happy.

When Swifty dies at the end Arbor feels guilty so he turns to the love of horses that Swift had when he was alive, this shows us the true extent of their friendship.

Coursework3_Further Story Board

The opening scene will be shot down my local alleyway There are two lamppost in this alleyway which supplies enough light o you are able to see what is going on, however it is also dark and creepy which will add to the mood. My main female character will be walking home from work. Late at night after a late shift at the local diner (11.00pm). This alleyway is quick wide as it leads onto a park, however due to the time it is empty.

The alleyway is set out with overgrown allotments on either side of the pathway and a train bridge towards the end. There are only a few lamp posts throughout this scene which will create interesting lighting and a creepy atmosphere.

Whilst approaching the tunnel she noticed a homeless person on the far left. Snuggling up to the damp wall, he was being smothered by wet newspapers and a worn down blanket. Thinking nothing of the homeless man she just walks round him. Here I will include over the shoulder shots and close ups. Close-ups will be used to show the conditions he is living in (blanket, gratified wall) and an extreme close up on the girls reaction of finding the man.

I will include a high shot to show the class and importance of the women compared to the man. The lady walks past the man and he bites her on the ankle. This will only be a mid shot because I want the wound to not be seen in detail until later on in the film. After being bit she runs away down the rest of the alley, this will be a fade out shot as when she gets further away the shot falls back, making the character decrease in size.

She gets home and doesn’t realise the pain spreading in the lower leg, The shock of the attack took all her attention and energy. This leaves her exhausted so she just goes to her bedroom and shuts the world away. The lighting will be dull and the overall atmosphere of her room will look really depressing to symbolise the trauma and change shes going to experience in the next couple of weeks.

In the morning she awakens and discovers the extent of the bits. This worries her as she does not know if the man carried diseases that he could have gave her. An extreme close up will be used to see the detail in the bit, and another close up of her facial expressions.

To make this bit I will use latex and body paint. I am confident that the makeup side of this project will turn out realistic because I’ve had practice on friends and siblings.

She goes into severe depression and doesn't leave her room. Her parents and college friends don’t know why as she completely blocks them out. After several days of no eating/showering she decides to go back to college and move on with her life.

Whilst this scene is going on there will be minimal shots and angles changes. This is because I want the viewer to feel the girls emotion and to see the lack of energy she has. The only change of shot size will be the close up of her mobile ringing. This is to show the lack of contact with the outside world, also to introduce us to the characters which will be shown later on in the film.

So she goes to college and tries to get on with her life. As she enters the college she gets many odd looks. She ignores them and meets her friends; we do not see the characters face in this scene, just her back. This is to keep the audience in suspense as to what the peers are staring at. When she meets her friends, we can tell from their reaction something has changing in her appearance. We still haven’t seen her face.

She is given a mirror and we can see in the reflection (extreme close up) that one of her eyes has completely changed colour. I will use a contact lens that I had from Halloween to create this scene.  Although her eye has completely changed colour, she put it down to lack of sleep and continues with school work and social life.

Although she is carrying on with her life she is still seriously sick and her energy is decreasing. On her way to college one day she noticed her skin started to peel off. Shocked by this she didn’t know what to do. She could not feel the pain of the rotting skin yet she could see and feel it. Close up of her arm will be needed to show the full extent on her injury.

She went back home and refused to go college. When she was at home it got worse. Her legs, chest and back started to peel also. She hid from her family due to the risk of scare her younger sister. She smashed all the mirrors in her room, avoid looking at her disgraceful self. Blocked out her friends completely and didn’t leave her room.

It will be easy to create the peeling skin and will seem like she is actually rotting.

Realizing how bad her self-esteem had got she decided to end it once and for all. She went back to the tunnel to find the homeless man where it all began. She walked down the pathway and got to the tunnel but the man wasn’t there. She collapsed to the ground. The last shot will be a long distant zoom out of her crying on the floor. This gives the impression of a repeated cycle, as she is now in the same position as the homeless man.

My brother the Devil_Sally El Hasaini

My brother the devil, written and directed by Sally El Hosaini is a 2012 production focussing on teenagers and living with crime.

Mainly focusing on the themes of family, friendship and haterid we learn the true value of money and to what extent teens will go to earn a living.

The opening scene shows younger brother Mo celebrating his grades when exiting his last day of high school. We can tell my his facial expression that he has received good grades for his exams. We are then introduced to Mos older brother Rashid. Rashid is seen leaving an unloved and run down house. By the Mise En Scene used particularly the body language and costum we automatically assume Rashid is the less educated and more dangerous brother.

We are strongly introduced to the theme of Family when we discover Rashid hiding money in his mothers purse. Although this money was illegally earnt it still touches the viewers heart that a teen thug cares about his families survival.

Sally El Hasaini explores haterid the most throughout this production as the use of violence is over whelming. Their are multiple fight scenes and unpleasant scenes of drug use, which is a relatable case for some viewers. When violent scene are showed the camera quality becomes less professional and the lighting becomes darker. This warns the viewer that something dramatic is about to happen.

I think the twist to the story really makes us anaylisis why the film is called what it is. We assume the older brother is the 'devil' due to his dodgy lifestyle however further into the film we realise the title could be based on either sibling.

Both brothers are protagonist as they both have their individual goals however because Rashid has a larger variety of goals to succeed with I feel he is the stronger protagonist. The antagonist again is the brothers as they both stop each other from doing certain things. I think that the love the characters shown for each other is the reason why their goals were unforfilled. For example Mo did not earn respect of the other gang members because he cared to much to allow them to hurt Rashid.

Coursework2_Idea

My overal film idea is based on a mixed genre of both horror and thriller. The main idea is focused on a typical Zombie plot but with a twist.

After getting bit on the way home from work late at night, the character (not yet decided on sexuality most likely female) gets bitten by a standbyer. I have not yet fully decided whether this standbyer is a zombie or just a typical homeless man with an unknown disease.

She gets home and the next few days she stays hidden in her room due to both depression (from the incident) and a raging fever! Unlike the basic zombie film I've decided to change the plot. The teenager then goes on to live her life like how she did before the bite ie; going to college, getting the bus ect!

The change in the plot is that slowly and slowly over a time period of say 4 weeks she changes appearance. By this I don't mean typical girls dying hair and changing makeup brands I mean taking the form of a flesh rotting female aka zombie!

The first part of her body to change will be one of her eyes, I will be able to do this by usin a unusable colored contact lense(yellow)which I used on Halloween! The second thing could be either a section of her neck or arm. By this I mean I will cover and design the section of the skin in a way that looks like the flesh is peeling!

I thought of this idea because I discovered on Halloween I was able to deface an area of skin in a way that makes someone look like a deadly creature!

I think this overal idea is good as I will not need many props and I can use everyday environment.

Above_Zombie Makeup on Halloween.

Dirty Pretty Things_ Stephen Frears

Written by Steven Knight in 2002, Dirty pretty things focuses on various themes including crime. This theme is the strongest as constantly throughout the film we see different characters dealing with changes throughout due to the events that enfold In the film for example the reveal of the heart in the toilet lead Okwe to discover the truth to what is really happening in the Baltic Hotel. Another theme I felt was strong throughout this film would be determination because we see each character struggle with different challenges but they show determination to overcome them.

The genre for this film would be social realism as it includes realistic content such as the overall idea that people have about the illegal immigrants and right they are allowed. Overall this theme is the main thing that affects the audience and their views on the public.

The protagonists in this film are Okwe and Senay, I think Okwe was the strongest protagonist as he completed many of his goals and in the end he got the freedom he longed to get. Senay was a protagonist as she dreamed of living the life of a New York City girl and in the end reserved her freedom to live that dream.

Mis en scene for this film in my opinion would be the workers scene in which Senay is working, this shows their mood through their body language and facial expressions. You can identify the atmosphere due to the emotions portrayed in their actions.

The narrative began by introducing us to the main character (Okwe) and his struggles of holding down several jobs. In the second scene we understand his secret love affair with one of the maid in the hotel (Senay). The plot dramatically changes when Okwe meets the hooker (Julia ) and his conscience changes for the worst. Towards the end of this 120 minute screening Steven Knight grabs our attention with the plot twist leading to a fortunate ending ... For some.

Overall I feel this film kept me intrigued as each scene had a different challenge however I feel the realism made me think more closely to the present day in which many of these events happen.

Evil Dead_Fede Alvarez

Evil Dead is a 2013 horror based film written and directed by Uruguay man Fede Alvarez, focusing mostly on the theme of friendship and survival. Alvarez choose the correct actors to play the role of these life changing characters as you begin to feel sorrow for their outcomes. Main star Mia, played by the amazing Jane Levy, really wows the audience with her unusual role of the Possessed sister/friend.  The overall Narrative of this film really intrigued me as it was different to any other possession film Ive seen, this is because we learn from the introduction of the film that Mia has a drug problem which then fools the friends to believe her possession is just a break down from lack of drugs.

Like all horror films they are completely filled with loud music and flashy scenes, with Evil Dead i think Fede Alvarez too the sound and lighting to a new level as constantly throughout they increased. The Mise En Scene was well thought out as they had many props(shotgun, scalpel, toilet seat ect) and their body language constantly changed depending on their current situation. The best use for Mise En Scene has to be with main character Jane Levy, as she had a variety of costumes(depending what character she was playing), amazing facial affects and cleverly acted injurgy scenes.

The whole movie was based in the siblings family home, surrounded by a dark and gloomy woods. You'd think the main protagonist would be Mia as she needed to become 'un'possessed however I personally think the protagonist was Mias brother David(Shiloh Fernandez), I think this because throughout the whole 91 minute he was constantly changing his goals. He began by trying to win to love and respect of his sister and friends, however towards the end he focused more or saving Mias life and sacrificing his own. This part of the film was very touching as it showed how much he loves and regretted not being there for her.

This film was recently made meaning the CGI and Special Affect were expected to be up to date and at the best of there ability. Personally I think Alvarez did a great job with the layout and overall outcome of this production, however the only negative opinion I have is that the ending draged on as just when you thought the screening was about to end the action started up again again a further 15 minutes. Saying that some people would disagree as they think the longer ending gave them their money worth and kept them intrigued for longer

Harry Brown_Daniel Barber

Harry Brown is a more recent film made my Daniel Barber just after Britain’s riots(2009). The film focuses on Social Realism along with the themes of Age, Revenge and Violence, I think the combination of these themes together gave a very powerful and relatable outcome to the film. Because this film was set in London and during a time people where I was alive I was able to understand and acknowledge what happened.

Michael Caine stared as the main role of Harry brown, along with Emily Mortimer as Alice Frampton. Mr Caine was the best choice for actor as he came across as a polite elderly man with a violent pass. The Narrative of this film was very intriguing as throughout there was rotten language, violent actions and off putting scenes. These off putting scenes however were real shots of the London riots which added chaos to the overall film.

The beginning of this film shows us the strong bond between to elderly men living in a youth neighborhood. Before the violence reaches its worse we see the two elderly men playing chess in the pub. Studying the conversation of the lowlife youths and Harrys past in the Royal Marines Len goes on to ask Harry ‘Did you ever kill anyone’ this questions contradicts itself as Harry then goes on to kill many teens in a search for justice.

Mise En Scene was used constantly throughout the 103 minute films due to the multiply use of weapons, costumes, and environment. The sound also varies due to the characters; example; harry and lens conversation based upon manners and polite constructions, the teenagers on the other hand differ from shouting and a high quantity of rude language. The lighting tends to stay the same focusing or light and day, however the night is exaggerated due to it mainly being set in pitch black environments with only objects like lighter and fires to make light.

Harry Brown is the main protagonist as he is constantly trying to find justice for the death of his loved ones. However id say that Noel(main youth) played by Ben Drew was also a protagonist as he was forever trying to make himself look powerful around his friends and constantly wanting to ruin ad disrupt other peoples lives.

The camera quality was surprisingly good throughout the whole film, as I was expecting the camera to have a low density to represent the youths. The camera was at its best during the day times as it captured all the detail in the scene, the violent shots that were taken from recordings of the riots were expected to be rubbish as they were not recorded by professionals however the wonky camera angles and dodgy shots made the scene more relatable.

I think Michael Caine and the other actors did a brilliant performance and it kept me interested throughout the whole 103 minutes. Daniel Barber did well with the layout of the movie as it makes everyday teenagers think closely towards theirs and others actions as it can affect everyone.

Rec-Jaume Balaguero

Rec is a 2007 foreign film Written and Directed by Spanish citizen Jaume Balaguero which narrative followed on to make 3 films. Each film had a 3 year time gap between them, however they managed to use the same setting and environment, and this makes the narrative more believable as they look more linked. The first Rec is the film Im basing this essay on as I feel it had the best outcome and was the most grabbing. The main start through Rec 1&2 was Manuela Velasco who played the main protagonist Angela Vidal. Angela played the role of a Journalist who’s interview of a fireman’s life took a turn for the worst, when Angela and camera man Manu (Ferran Terranza) become trapped in a council estate with a variety of different people, one of which carries a deadly disease…

Balaguero based the genre of these films upon Horror and Thriller as he wanted to scare yet intrigue the viewer. He kept the themes to a minimal as he mainly focused on survival. I think by keeping the themes to a minimal it created a more intense feel. The plot of this film constantly changed throughout as it began with the intension of making money and a career (recording of the fireman’s life), to escaping the life threatening situations, to pure old survival. I really like the way each person in the film was a protagonist as there goal was to survive and protect there family however as Angela Vidal was the only character to survive into film 2 it makes her the strongest protagonist as she experiences many different goals, including survival, finding her friend and getting answers the murders that happened.

The things that turned me off this film the most was the fact I spent more time reading the subtitles than I did actually watching the actors. Also because the film was based on the first person prospective the camera quality was not of good density it made seeing certain parts of the film hard to understand. Although saying that I think towards the end of the film  when the camera changed into night vision it added a great deal of effect and made seeing the characters and their actions easier to identify.

The sound was clear as you could understand what each character said; although the characters were constantly shouting meaning the sound could get muffled sometimes. When the characters were in hiding from the ‘thing’ there voices dropped from a shout to a whisper which tells us the situation they are in. When the shot was too quiet you could tell a something drastic was about the happen and the camera angles change and the shot becomes wider, like its making space for entry of another character of object.

Overall if I was asked to rate Rec I would give it 4 stars. As the performance, setting and acting were amazing however the subtitles sometimes made the narrative hard to follow.

FishTank_Andrea Arnold

Fishtank is a 2009 film written and directed by Andrea Arnold. It was called Fishtank due to the fact the characters were trapped in a terrible society with no escape or plan to reach a more upper class life. This film stared Katie Jarvis(also know as Sadie Burns in her most recent 2014 series Suspects). Jarvis takes up the role of the independent yet unfortunate teen, when we follow her through the film learning the struggles she faces living in a rough neighbourhood. Arnold makes it clear throughout the 97 minute screening that Katie is the main protagonist as we see the dream of getting a career in dancing evolve, due to the mothers boyfriends (Michaek Fassbender)positive attitude and encouragement.

Straight away in the introduction of the film we are able to identify the genre(Social Realism) and minimal themes(Hate,Poverty,Betrayal). As the narrative goes on the themes increase as Katie inherits a variety of different emotions(Love,Jealousy and Relationship) towards the other characters, for example: towards the being of the film Katie despises her mother as she viewers her as a bad role model for her younger sister Tyler and how she does not show passion for their insistence, however towards the end of the film Katie's feelings towards her mum switch as she understands her mums effort to keep the family save and off the streets.

Andrea Arnold also made the 2003 Wasp film which also includes a lower class family struggling with poverty. How these two films relate is clever due to two different narratives yet very similar characters.

As director of this well thought out production Arnold knew the exact camera shots she wanted…which was a lot. Multiple shot sizes were used constantly throughout however the strongest shot i thought was the extremely long shot towards the beginning when Katie walked through the neighbourhood. I liked this shot in particular because it gave us a strong and clear view of how her estate and daily routine looked.

Much Mise En Scene was used such as the variety of clothing, change of scenery and most definitely body language. My favourite use of Mise En Scene though had to be the Red balloon being released at the closing of the last scene. I particularly liked this because it represented her letting go of her terrible past and focusing on the future of her and her family. This film ended with very minimal themes accept the strongest of them all Hope.

Timbuktu_Abderrahmane Sissako

Timbuktu is a new screening in England based on the life style of those living in unfortunate countries and suffer from poverty and a with a strict government and laws. The film included a variety of different families and workers who we seen either struggling with looking after each other or disobeying the new laws that are introduce towards the beginning of the film and receiving unforgivable punishments.

The main focus of this production is to acknowledge us of the seriousness of poverty and war, allowing us to see the damage it causes. I was shocked to discover the main Protagonist(kidane) having more than one goal. This main characters goal constantly changes even up to his last line which automatically tells us that his goals are important and he must achieve them.

This film includes subtitles which personally I dislike due to the confussion of having to follow the narrative through reading. Abderrahmane Sissako explored many many camera angles which definitely kept the film more interesting however I felt the use of Mise En Scene was kept to a minimal as there was not much props and the costumes and settings were plain and dull, however saying that the characters were meant to be living in a time period were religious clothing was one of the main laws to oblige by. Sissako really explored Religion constantly throughout his film as the content reveals.

Overall I would not personally go see this film again as i found is confusing and not very seat grabbing.

Soft(Simon Ellis)'VS' Wasp(Andrea Arnold)

As you can see from the links below these two clips are very similar. Both show different people struggling on a daily basis due to poverty and politics. With wasp we are immediately introduced the unfortunate family as they leave their shabby council flat and walk down the foggy and unsettling road. The director of this short film really grabs the viewer with the mise en scene used through out. The camera angles and costumes made us pity the children as we can see the dirt and sadness which smothers them. The mother is portrayed as violent yet protective in the begging on the film as she looks out for her eldest daughter after finding out she was mistreated by another girl in the area. However the layout and theme of this setting allows us to view her also as s a rough and unfit mum as she uses fail language and actions around her young children. This is similar to Soft as the youths are also shown using bad attitude towards the working citizen, making us feel scared from the workers point of view. Unlike wasp the camera quantity changes constantly from good, clear quality (wealthy family) to low density and poor filming (youths).

Both short filmings explore a variety of themes such as love, hate, revenge and jealousy. Hate is one of the strongest themes shown throughout as in wasp the mother feels hatred upon the other mothers and people with in the pub who are more wealthy and live better lives than her, Soft also focuses on hate and jealousy as the youths hate upon the wealthy mans family as they are jealous of the privileges they have, however hate is also used from the wealthy family due to the rude children vandalized their home and attacking his son.

I enjoyed both clips as they were realist and really made me think about children my age and how their actions affect others. I preferred Wasp however as I was in more suspect watching Soft included louder tones and unsettling behavior.

60 Second Film Review

With my 60 second video I can honestly say it is an embarrassment… I am dressed inappropriately as I am wearing night clothes and look unprofessional. Personally I feel I portrayed myself as a lazy student due to the unplanned and messy layout of the clip. However, saying that, I believe I covered key points that symbolized me and allowed the viewer to receive a deeper insight to the subjects I chose and career I see myself following.

To make this video better I would have liked to have made it longer as it didn’t quite reached the given time of 60 seconds. I would have also liked to have included a variety of different points, as well as a more fun and energetic attitude. I added music to the background of me speaking as I thought it would have added affect however it drowned out my voice and took the attention of what I was saying.

60 Second Video

.

Last week I was forced against my will to assist my younger siblings to the local cinema. It was a choice between Box trolls or the new Angelina Jolie, Maleficent. After the not so hard decision we ventured on to the 3D screening of the modernized sleeping beauty…

Being a PG production I was not expecting the children’s bed time story to be much good. I was pleasantly surprised. Director Robert Stromberg managed to enchant the viewers via the many different emotions felt by the characters. This 2014 movie was based on the 1900 Childs novel but smartly adapted to grab all ages and genders. Fantasy, Love, Adventure and Revenge were the most explored themes within the 97 minute rolling, as a vengeful fairy was driven to curse an infant princess yet only to discover she was in need of the young females help to restore the peace between mortals and immortals worlds.

I was shocked to discover Jolie taking on the main role within this fantasy film as she is mostly known for her action and suspense releases; however I think she really emphasized and brought out the two sides of an angry female. Elle Fanning played young princess Aurora who grew up under threat from Maleficent. For her age, Fanning played her character unbelievably well; leaving viewers like me believing she was actually a  teenaged girl in distress.

When getting home from my over rated and over charged trip I found and watched the 1940 version of Sleeping Beauty…the comparisons were nothing alike. Both narratives include a cursed female with an evil godmother, however within Maleficent there were less animated characters and a lot more drama. I also found and read the novel of Sleeping Beauty. I always tend to enjoy books more than digital screenings as they include more detail and are overall more entertaining. However it is the 21st century and we find more and more generations lacking in literature and old fashioned techniques leaving them addicted to digital devices such as the cinema.

According to my 10 year old brother Maleficent was ‘wicked’ and ‘well worth the money’, seeing as he never paid, his second opinion was invalid however I agree Maleficent was a well structured and well written narrative. Robert Strombery, Linda Woolverton and Charles Perrault did an excellent job with the remaking and updating of this well known novel. I would most definitely recommend this new, seat grabbing fantasy to any person wanting their moneys worth when visiting the cinema.

Get Off My Land_Douglas Ray

Get off my land is a short film consisting of 3 characters. A male and female (couple) and land owner. This film began with pleasant scenery of trees and wide open spaces. The couple venture through the woods to a gate leading into a large area. As they continue on they meet the not so happy land owner. This owner warns the couple they are trespassing on private land which is against the law. Disagreeing with the owner the boyfriend confronts the man about rights and responsibility. Twist within the short film, after being corrected the and owner was not very amused with the boyfriends cocky ways, goes back he his tractor and receives a gun. Loading and threatening the couple plead with the man to forgive them and let them pass through to an area of land with a public footpath. The weapon holding owner shoots the boyfriend leaving him collapsing to the floor. It is getting towards the end of the film and we begin to think the female gets out of the horrible situation alive…wrong. As the boyfriend fell to the ground she lets out a piercing scream leaving the owner to hesitate and firing at her too. The film ends with the land owner driving away leaving behind the two dead lovers. Personally I thought this short film was interesting yet too short to really relate and understand. The film being so short left me unable to know and pity the couple’s unfortunate ending, and hate upon the elderly owner. The mood without this film was continuously changing, beginning with peaceful and relaxed and ending with shock and pure interest.
